REAL ENGAGEMENTS: Avalon & Zack

Most engaged couples I work with know the term “golden hour,” but there’s a magical moment between day and night, unique to living in a big city, that I love to explore. It’s called Blue Hour, and I definitely think we should consider it for your Chicago engagement session.

Blue Hour is kind of like twilight, but the sun has dipped so far below the horizon that the light is soft, dreamy, and a little bit dramatic. It’s when the sky is literally blue. These are the photos that go past sunset, and it’s honestly my favorite time of day to shoot photographs, especially in Chicago. Not to mention, it’s a time of day you typically aren’t going to have a chance to document on your wedding day (odds are, you’ll either be eating a delicious meal or busting a move on the dance floor at this time).

That’s what I loved about working with Avalon and Jack for their engagement session. I’m sure when I brought up Blue Hour that were like … “What hour?” But they put their trust in me to create these gorgeous images with them.

Playing around with time of day is a fantastic way to set the mood of your engagement photography. You can see that in the feel of Avalon and Jack’s images. I love them all, but take a look at their daytime photos with their puppy versus their photo session that lasted well past sunset and into Blue Hour.

No matter what time of day we plan your session, our approach to engagement photos is a bit different. Rather than ask, “Where do you want to take photos?” and expect you to spend your precious weekend time googling for the answer, we’ll send you a simple but fun questionnaire focused on you and what makes your relationship unique. What are your favorite activities to do together? Go-to date night spot? Best memories together? We’ll compile all that to create a custom photo plan that not only creates gorgeous images, but captures moments unique to the two of you.

In a city like Chicago, there are hundreds of gorgeous spots you can utilize that might just feel more special than standing in front of the Bean ;-)

But aside from locations, engagement sessions give you more freedom and creativity for photo timing than you’ll probably get on your wedding day. Send me a message and let’s talk about it!
