How to have Natural (but Perfect Skin) on Your Wedding Day
I hear many brides mention that they want natural wedding day makeup. But what exactly does that mean? I think for many, they think it means wearing less makeup but that's not always the case. At the same time, the old adage that you must wear excessively more makeup than normal for the sake of photos isn't exactly true either. But regardless of your preference on the amount of makeup, it's most likely safe to say every single person preparing to have their photo taken all day long wants to look their best (gentlemen who may not even be thinking about makeup, included!). So how can you set yourself up for the best-looking skin on your wedding day? The trick is to start well before the mascara ever even comes out. Today, we have a very handy guest blog from Katelyn of Elwynn & Cass, that will surprise you on the things you should be thinking about for that perfect natural wedding day makeup look.
If you have ever woken up with a pimple the day of an important event, you’ll want to keep reading. Chances are if you are a human being, who works, attends events, and/or gets stressed, you’ve had the occasional pimple pop up unceremoniously. I know I have and it’s not fun. Though, what if you could have clean, pimple-free skin that shines like you are a goddess, every single day? Life would be good. Well, guess what, it can be, and I’m sharing it with you, because I’ve been there and no one should have to suffer with bad skin. First off, skincare is very important, beyond the aesthetic side of things. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, so what you put in your body reflects on your skin (i.e. your diet), and what you put on the surface of your skin does as well. I like to think of a skincare routine like a workout routine or a diet. We plan it, map out our workouts, prep our meals, yet forget to implement a skincare routine, which is equally important. If you map out your workouts each week, you can do implement this skincare regime.
Everyday Skincare Routine
The basics you need for an everyday skincare regime are simple:
Cleanser
Toner
Mask
Blemish remedy
Moisturizer
Once you have these basics, based on your specific needs, you can add in fun things like, retinol for skin discoloration and the growth of new cells (for older skin). Or you could add in a serum to help with dark spots and aging skin. To start, you want a good cleanser that will remove makeup and dead skin cells without being too harsh. A lot of these can depend on skin types, but I generally find that if you use products for sensitive to normal/dry skin, you are safe, as they are meant for a wide range of people. I personally love my charcoal scrub (which is great for removing dead skin cells) from Derma-e. It’s natural and easy on cleansing, plus my skin looks fresh after and is soft and supple. I personally start with makeup remover wipes (like Burt’s Bees) to gently remove the first layer of makeup (for my nighttime routine), then use my charcoal scrub. After my scrub, I will take a toner to even my skin tone out. I love the MILK brand products, which are vegan and use all natural products. Plus they are effective as hell. After my toner, I use a blemish stick if need be for those pesky pimples, like my kelp stick. Or you can use lemon juice as an everyday hack. Once the blemishes are taken care of, then it’s time for moisturizer. Khiel’s is by far one of the best on the market and a small dollop goes a long way.
Pro tip: when massaging in your moisturizer, blend upwards rather than downwards. By blending and massaging up, you are essentially massaging your skin and preventing it from sagging (i.e. no plastic surgery needed in the future).
Pre-Event/ Wedding Beauty Timeline
The everyday skincare regime is some that you should do every single day, plus with a good diet, you’ll be glowing all year long. However, if you want a little extra prep before your wedding day or a big event, this is the routine that I recommend to my clients:5–6 Months Before The Wedding Day/Event:
Start getting facials and keep them about once a month, as this will give your skin time to get rid of any dirt/grime that is underlying way before the event itself.
Have your last facial about 1-2 months before the event, that way your skin has time to relax and/or heal if need be without stress.
1-2 Weeks Before The Wedding Day/Event:
Remember to eat right. Load up on fruits and veggies for energy, and nix the salt and fat.
Exfoliate and moisturize your skin (everyday skincare regime with charcoal scrub)
1 Day Before The Wedding Day/Event
Drink lots of water (people forget this one a lot).
Exfoliate your skin (with products you've tried before) to amp up your wedding day glow.
A skincare routine is all about consistency and making your skin health a priority. You don’t need a plethora of products, just 5-6 good ones and invest in them. Trust me, they are worth it, your skin doesn’t lie. Xoxo, KatelynDon't you just love how Sammi's natural freckles still came through with her lovely wedding day makeup?
